About the Opportunity

The BC Cancer Foundation is seeking a Development Officer for our Provincial team. Working as part of the Leadership & Community Giving team, the Development Officer is responsible for generating leadership giving throughout the province. This role will manage a large portfolio (250+) of mid-level prospects and oversee the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a broad pool of donors from a range of program areas to increase revenue through individual giving. This role works closely with other Foundation staff to ensure seamless donor integration between specialized portfolios, including corporate relations, community and mass participation events, major gifts and gift & estate planning. This individual will interface regularly with regional Foundation staff to ensure they are well-versed in priority projects throughout the province.

The Person

The Development Officer, Leadership Giving , is responsible for raising funds through a portfolio of active mid-level donors. The ideal candidate for this role has demonstrated success in engaging donors from a wide range of program areas through face-to face meetings, phone calls, emails to increase their giving and move the individual through the donor continuum.

We are looking for someone with a can-do attitude, who can apply their fundraising skills and hit the ground running. We require a candidate with the ability to work simultaneously on a variety of complex, high-volume projects with tight deadlines. Other attributes include strong organizational and analytical skills, and demonstrated business planning and project management skills.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Development , responsibilities will include:

Cultivate, secure and steward discovery circle gifts in the $1,000 to $25,000 range, while identifying and securing opportunities to elevate giving

Identify giving patterns of current donors and prospects; identify donors with potential for growth and increased involvement with BCCF

Utilize excellent interpersonal skills to engage individuals and manage relationships in a number of different capacities – with donors, volunteer Board and Cabinet members, senior administrators, medical and research staff

Maintain accurate, strategic and timely information on prospects and donors in our database, Raiser’s Edge

Setting and achieving aspirational annual activity goals aligned with the priorities of the Foundation and BC Cancer related to: strategic donor engagement; solicitations (current and planned gifts) and the success rate of same; engagement of our BC Cancer partners; and collaborative activities related to revenue generation across the Foundation.

Evaluating site/program results with direct manager to identify potential challenges and respond to day-to-day concerns.

Develops an understanding of BCCF fundraising priorities, attending prospect and donor strategy meetings where necessary to recommend research strategies and approaches

Building strong and collaborative working relationships with BC Cancer counterparts, where appropriate, to ensure alignment and support for fundraising activity.

Develop and maintain a good working knowledge of BC Cancer priorities

Representing the BC Cancer Foundation, when requested, at official meetings and functions as required.

Qualifications:
A degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field, plus 3-5 years’ experience in fundraising / donor relations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Must have a demonstrated ability to secure mid-level gifts with a readiness to broaden their fundraising skills to include gift and estate planning and major gifts

A valid Class 5 drivers’ license and access to a vehicle

The ability to speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese would be considered an asset

Core knowledge + skills:
Specialized knowledge of sophisticated fundraising programs particularly in annual giving, major gifts and/or community giving

Superior verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to provide clear, succinct information to lay audience

Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure high volume of tasks are completed and recorded in a timely manner

Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team

Knowledge of fundraising principles and practices; keen interest in new and innovative ideas for research and pipeline management

Demonstrated professionalism and tact in handling highly sensitive and confidential information ethically; adhering to professional standards and protecting the confidential information of BCCF and BC Cancer

Excellent computer skills including word processing, database/information management, email and internet. A knowledge of sophisticated fundraising software programs, preferably Raiser’s Edge would be an advantage
