Community, culture, and competition. All in one boat. The Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society (dba Dragon Boat BC) is the non-profit producer of North America’s flagship dragon boat festival, the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival, and runs Dragon Zone Paddling Club. The Society also produces a series of races, cultural programming, and community initiatives centred around the traditional Chinese sport of dragon boat. Through its All Access and youth programs, supported by the Milton K. Wong Legacy Project, the Society makes paddling experiences accessible regardless of any barriers to participation.

Job Summary

The Club Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the paddling club facility operations and programming, as well as upholding customer service and operational standards, and working at the facility to ensure regular operations.

The Club Coordinator will also work closely with other staff members to help clients on the water, answer client inquiries, and ensure successful dock operations. This role will ensure that all staff and clients of the club have a positive experience in a safe and enjoyable environment.

The Club Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing and optimizing the Society’s current profile of programs. They will work with other departments in a leadership position for special community events, youth and corporate groups, and other club programs.The Club Coordinator will regularly review and update all club policies and procedures with approval from Club Manager, as well as identify and provide solutions to potential risks that may arise.

Due to the nature of our operations, candidates should regularly expect to work in outdoor and/or aquatic environments. Staff in all departments will spend at least part of the time working at our facility in a customer service facing role to build cross-department familiarity with all aspects of the organization’s operations.

Key Responsibilities

Staff Oversight:

  • Lead, motivate, and support a large team within a time-sensitive and demanding environment, including conflict resolution
  • Facilitate training during staff onboarding, additional follow-up sessions, and ongoing staff training
  • Regularly review and edit training processes for all staff working on the docks
  • Ensure schedules, regulatory, and safety standards are created and adhered to, and provide suggestions to improve and implement the same

Facility Operations:

  • Ensure facility, equipment, systems, and operations are up to Society standards, and work with other staff to immediately resolve issues as they arise
  • As required, working at the Society’s facilities to ensure ongoing operations and customer service
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all club assets including boats, paddles, PFDs, etc.
  • Create and submit equipment purchase or repair requests as needed with Facilities and Equipment Manager
  • Ensure maintenance of equipment, fleet, and facilities as directed by the Facilities and Equipment Manager
  • Review and update club policies and procedures as required, including dock processes

Program Delivery

  • Develop, review, and implement paddling programs
  • Facilitate required skill testing and drills for club clients
  • Assist clients arriving for kayak, outrigger, or other programs
  • Assist setting up/taking down or launching boats, cleaning equipment between use

General:

  • Submit regular reports on area of responsibility to direct supervisor identifying areas of growth/concerns and results or updates for initiatives, projects, events, client concerns, risks, and registrations
  • Complete miscellaneous tasks and jobs as assigned by supervisors
  • Participate in staff meetings and share thoughts on other operational areas
  • Participate in optional training opportunities including: cultural training programs, sport development, learning programs and skill development clinics

Skills/Experience

  • Prior work experience in a recreation/sport and/or non-profit/charity environment preferred.
  • Prior experience and knowledge of water sports including, but not limited to: dragon boat, kayak, SUP, OC-1, OC-6 is a strong asset.
  • Prior experience with cultural communities and community events is a strong asset. Multilingualism is a strong asset.
  • Candidate should have strong verbal and written communication and customer service skills.
  • Candidate should have the ability to delegate responsibilities while maintaining organizational control and training in conflict management.
  • Ideal candidate should be able to lift up to 50 lbs (occasionally)
  • Ideal candidate should be available on evenings and weekends.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license is a strong asset.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), WordPress, social media channels, and other standard office digital software is expected.

Salary: $50,000 – $60,000 depending on experience
