Job Title: Digital Literacy Instructor (for persons with disabilities)
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week (Permanent)
Reports To: Settlement Programs Manager
Location: PICS Head Office (Surrey, BC)
Job Summary: Under direction of Settlement Programs Manager, the Digital Literacy Instructor provides basic digital literacy instruction to the eligible program participants (persons with disabilities) about acquiring/using digital skills and tools, designs and implements the curriculum, prepares a service delivery schedule as per program mandate, undertakes lesson-planning that utilizes and adapts classroom teaching materials. This position is also responsible for offering appropriate referrals to the participants on Settlement related and/or other issues.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- adheres to policies and standards as established by PICS Policy and Procedure Manual, PICS Health and Safety Guidelines;
- adopts creative strategies and establishes appropriate community partnerships to reach and recruit client target group(s) and to provide orientation to clients;
- conducts and assesses client eligibility for the intake process;
- establishes a positive rapport and working relationship with clients and engages them in a supportive learning environment;
- plans, organizes, and facilitates digital literacy classes to clients through both online and in-person delivery methods;
- follow the Technology Standards and Curriculum to ensure coursework supports acquisition of basic digital skills;
- adapts and modifies curricula according to program/organization guidelines;
- develops lesson plans based on approved curricula and core framework;
- develops lesson plans for program participants to learn in a practical manner that can be applied in the real-world context;
- teaches classes in accordance with program outcomes;
- maintains and submits accurate records such as attendance sheets and other client data and information through relevant forms, databases;
- maintains the teaching space and an inventory of information and technology equipment (hardware and software) in partnership with the IT Department;
- communicates client needs and issues to the Program Manager;
- refers learners to Settlement Services as needed;
- completes all required and assigned reports;
- utilizes marketing resources to promote activities and disseminates information that is consistent to marketing and communications plans at PICS;
- contributes to strategic directions/goals of immigrant services and is proactive in identifying areas of improvement, sector trends, potential partnerships, etc.;
- contributes to a positive work environment by maintaining a positive working relationship with other workers and volunteers; and
- performs other program-related duties as assigned from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- excellent communication skills required;
- excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills;
- proven ability to resolve matters with crisis intervention, conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem-solving skills and techniques; and
- ability to work independently, set priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Assets:
- knowledge of language other than English, such as French, Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog Amharic, etc.;
- own transportation, valid driver’s license and insurance; and
- flexibility and willingness to work outside of regular work hours.
Other Requirements and Attributes:
- proficient verbal and written knowledge of English;
- a college degree/diploma in computer science/Information Technology related fields or adequate adult digital literacy teaching experience;
- experience working with vulnerable populations; and
- clean Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
