Job Title: Marketing and Communications Assistant
Location: Chinatown Storytelling Centre, 168 East Pender Street, Vancouver BC
Duration: End of May – End of September 2023
Hourly: $18.00 per hour
Job Description
The Chinatown Storytelling Centre is seeking an enthusiastic Marketing and Communications Assistant with excellent writing skills and a passion for developing engaging content in both traditional and digital media. Reporting to the CSC Marketing & Communications Coordinator, the Marketing and Communications Assistant will help create and distribute original content for our social media communications, newsletters, and print materials. These communications will effectively promote our exhibitions, events, school programs, and community outreach activities. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and organized, with an ability to craft compelling stories for a broad range of audiences. Familiarity with graphic design, web design, and photography would be a strong asset.
About the Chinatown Storytelling Centre
The Chinatown Storytelling Centre documents and shares the cultural stories of the Chinese Canadian community as experienced and witnessed through its historic epicentre, Vancouver’s Chinatown. Our Centre celebrates Chinatown’s contributions to the development of Vancouver and highlights the roles of Chinese Canadians in the building of Canada as a nation. We believe when we look back on stories of adversity, resilience, and triumph, we reveal our shared history. We believe this common ground is where we can build a more inclusive society moving forward.
Responsibilities
- Develop marketing assets such as images, bios, event and program descriptions.
- Play a key role in promoting our annual festival, Light Up Chinatown!
- Compile informed reports with performance metrics across marketing channels.
- Help maintain a strong social media presence, including drafting and scheduling social media posts, responding to comments and increasing engagement.
- Assist in coordinating and managing onsite media visits and visits by other department vendors (ie. photographers, videographers, etc.).
- Provide live coverage of our hosted events, school visits, and outreach activities for audience engagement and social media promotion.
- Support the ongoing development of our social media strategies, email marketing, website content, and print campaigns.
- Update local event calendars with our events and programs.
- Provide general administrative support for all CSC marketing initiatives, including market and audience research, managing invoices, organizing data files and supplies
Qualifications
- Candidates must be eligible under the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations program: https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/funding/young-canada-works/students-graduates/heritageorganizations-students.html
- Excellent skills in writing and content creation for various types of media -Successfully completed coursework in English, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, Arts Administration, Asian (or Asian Diaspora) Studies, or related field.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail
- Self-motivated, with a positive attitude and willingness to learn
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Familiar with Microsoft Office applications, Google Suite, and video conferencing platforms such as Zoom
- Experience with design software (ie. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator)
- Experience with social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube
- Related work experience, training or internship in a museum, archives or cultural organization would be a strong asset
- Knowledge of Chinese Canadian history and Chinese language (Cantonese) are assets
