ROLE: Activity Leaders, Residential Juniors Program at UBC & ILSC Vancouver (Multiple vacancies)
REPORTS TO: Activity Manager , Residential Juniors Program at UBC
DURATION OF PROGRAM: 4-6 weeks – July 2 to August 13, 2023 (Pre-program staff training from June 28-June 30, 2023)
Activity leaders inject life into the activities program of an ILSC Junior Camp. They provide an experience which is stimulating and culturally enriching for students. They supervise the students outside the classroom, overseeing their welfare, safety and discipline at all times.
The Residential Juniors Program at UBC requires 2 Activity Leadership Teams: Residential Activity Leaders who live at UBC with the students and Off-Site Activity Leaders who work on a part-time basis (15-40 hours per week) and commute to and from UBC to supervise students on off-site excursions and field trips.
Activity Leaders at ILSC Vancouver work on a part-time basis, between 15-40 hours per week. Activity Leaders are required to commute to and from the location of the program and are paid an hourly rate.
The schedule timeline and hourly requirements are as follows:
1. Residential Activity Leaders (Residential Juniors Program at UBC)
- Full time hours on-site at UBC will begin on June 28, 2023, until August 13, 2023
- Pre-program staff training at UBC will take place from June 28, 2023, to June 30, 2023
- Your weekly work schedule will consist of six consecutive days of work, followed by one full day off per week.
- Accommodation and meals are included during this summer position
- Remuneration is $675/week.
2. Off-site Activity Leaders (Residential Juniors Program at UBC)
- Pre-program staff training at UBC will take place from June 28, 2023, to June 30, 2023
- Your part-time weekly work schedule will consist of 2 weekday afternoon activities, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 1-6 PM and 1-2 full-day weekend activities from 9 AM-8 PM (may vary depending on activity).
- Remuneration is $18/hour.
3. Activity Leader (ILSC Vancouver)
- Pre-program staff training will take place at the ILSC Vancouver campus from June 28, 2023, to June 30, 2023
- Your part-time weekly work schedule will consist of supervising students during their 5 weekday morning activities, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM-1:30 PM and during their 1 full-day weekend activity, on Saturday from 9:00 AM-8:00 PM (will vary depending on activity) and availability on some Sundays to greet students at airport (will be scheduled by the Junior Program Manager and/or Activity Manager with the team on a rotational basis).
- Remuneration is $18/hour.
Duties and Responsibilities
The job duties of these positions include, but are not limited to:
- Welcome students on the first Sunday with orientation around the site, checking into rooms, and providing initial ‘getting to know you’ entertainment as directed by the Activity Manager.
- Attend staff meetings on weekdays for briefings, activity preparation, liaising with the academic team and training.
- Encourage full and enthusiastic involvement by students in the scheduled social program, leading by example.
- Monitor the health and safety, welfare and discipline of students, anticipating discrimination, bullying, and damage always notifying a member of the management team.
- Monitor the whereabouts of students through roll-calls at assembly, lunch-time and in the evenings, ensuring that curfews are kept and bed-times respected.
- Complete attendance records of students as required and reports on absence or lateness or any behavioural issues
- Co-operate with the Activity Manager, and on occasion with agents and accreditation inspectors, in the observation and evaluation of activities.
- Supervise the departure of the students on their departure day, checking beds and facilities, collecting keys as appropriate, escorting students and luggage to pick-up points at agreed times.
- Assist with greeting students at the airport upon their arrival, as requested by the Junior Program Manager and/or Activity Manager.
- Assist with arrivals and departures of students, checking bedrooms and facilities, escorting students on airport transfers as and when required etc.
- All other reasonable requests.
Additional Duties by Position:
- Residential Activity Leaders will supervise the ‘going to bed’ and ‘getting up’ routines, morning and afternoon breaks, evening mealtimes, and homework supervision on a rotation basis
- Off-site Activity Leaders will take responsibility for leading assigned activities and groups during excursions.
- Activity Leaders at ILSC Vancouver will assist the Junior Program Manager and Activity Manager with the Student Orientation at the Vancouver campus on the first Monday of each week, providing initial ‘getting to know you’ activities, as well as assisting students with public transit cards and SIM cards, and any other tasks required prior to starting the program, as directed by the Activity Manager
Skills and Attributes
Essential
- Experience working with teenagers in a camp or residential environment.
- Enthusiasm, energy and motivational skills
Desirable
- CPR / First Aid / Lifeguard certification
- Instructor experience e.g., sports, drama, dance, arts and crafts etc.
- The ability to speak Mandarin, Japanese or Taiwanese will be an asset
