About the role
We are looking for a Manager Engineering, the role is responsible for managing a team of discipline engineering leads within the Owner’s Team along with the respective Engineering Service Provides delivering engineering for the project. The role is also responsible for all project permitting activities associated with new facilities constructed as part of the project scope. The engineering manager leads, plans and co-ordinates the detailed engineering for the project in conjunction with their EPCM counterparts as well as playing a significant role in the coordination, synergy and integration of efficiencies that exist between the procurement, permitting, construction and commissioning elements of the work. The scope of the project includes a large-scale underground ore handling system, concentrator upgrade and underground non-process infrastructure such as mobile equipment workshops and mine ventilation facilities.
Working Monday to Friday as a residential in Ulaanbaatar city and reporting to the GM Engineering within RT Projects group with a dotted line reporting structure to the OTUG Project Director, you will be:
- Developing the strategy and execution plans for detailed engineering based on the scope requirements and schedule.
- Applying disciplined governance and quality assurance across all aspects of the engineering function for the OTUG project.
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to drive a culture of collaboration, participation and improvement.
- Managing and developing the performance of the team in line with Rio Tinto’s values, in order to achieve objectives, including Zero Harm.
- Monitoring and managing the performance of key Engineering Service Providers (ESPs) to ensure engineering is being prioritised and delivered to meet the agreed construction schedule
- Identifying and mitigating the key project risks and maximise opportunities for the project.
- Proactively managing the project’s compliance related activities related to the engineering function.
- Analysing and reporting budget and cost variations to contribute to strategic decision making.
- Working closely with the procurement, construction, commissioning, operational readiness and operations’ stakeholders to ensure a smooth handover and ramp up at the conclusion of construction.
What you will bring
- Degree qualification in Engineering and engineering management experience attained during the execution of large scale base metals projects
- Demonstrated previous success in a leadership role
- Ability to quickly digest and understand the significant body of engineering that has been completed to date and take responsibility for the management of the remaining engineering scope and support construction teams during the remaining construction period
- Underground mining experience is highly desirable.

Where you’ll be working
Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
