Robert Lee YMCA (955 Burrard St, Vancouver), other YMCA BC Greater Vancouver locations and the Lower Mainland Hybrid in-person workshops and primary support

35 hours per week
Some weekends and evenings required per program needs

Nature and Scope:
The Self Employment for Newcomers program will help new immigrants & eligible refugees learn about work in Canada & steps to start a small business. Participants will learn the components of doing business in Canada. Through a combination of classroom and one to one support, the 10 week program will include topics that are relevant not only to self employment but also to Canadian workplace practices. Participants will receive one to one support to complete a business plan & launch their business. Working in a team of four, the Business Advisor will have the primary responsibility for delivering workshops and providing training and coaching to support participants in converting a great idea into a successful business.
Major Responsibilities:
- Recruit, screen, and assess participants for program suitability and eligibility
- Conduct community outreach and marketing to engage and recruit participants as needed
- Coach and mentor participants to create an individualized business plan
- Create, prepare and facilitate small business workshops
- Facilitate group training/education and networking meetings
- Research and provide relevant resources customized for each participant
- Manage participant files/information (electronic and/or hard copy)
- Maintain detailed case notes
- Conduct participant follow-up, documentation and reporting
- Fundraise and support YMCA’s initiatives as needed
- Other duties as required
Qualifications/Experience:
- 3-5 years small business experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, education and/or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Coaching, counselling and/or mentoring education and/or experience
- Outstanding facilitation experience (online and in-person), with the knowledge, techniques and personality to easily engage participants
- Relevant experience working in a community based and/or immigrant serving organization
- In-depth knowledge of immigrant issues and cross-cultural communication
- Fluency in one of the main newcomer languages other than English is an asset; Mandarin or Farsi are strong assets
- Experience with community outreach and marketing
- Knowledge of business trends and community resources
- Strong business writing skills, including experience with business plans
- Excellent communications skills, including verbal and written English
- Proven competence with administration and reporting
- Good Microsoft Office skills
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
- The YMCA has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy requiring all staff and volunteers to be vaccinated as per the timelines set out by the province – one dose by September 13 and second dose by October 24.=
