Position: Stopping the Violence Counsellor, Transition House Based
Hours: 36 hours per week; typically working Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with every second Friday free from work.
Location: Based out of Ishtar’s administration office but with regular days and hours in Ishtar’s two transition houses
Salary : Grid 14P Step 1 $ 33.17 per hour.

About the Opportunity: Reporting to the Manager, Non-Residential Programs, or their designate, the Stopping the Violence Counsellor is responsible for supporting some of the Langley’s most vulnerable and marginalized women. As such your primary responsibility is to find creative ways to offer one-to-one and group counselling and support to women who may not consistently show up for appointments, who may show up for appointments while under the influence and or who may not always appreciate their time with you. You must be flexible, able to respond to crises and meet with women on short or no notice. You are required to provide services on an outreach basis, to Ishtar’s two transition house programs. It is imperative you adopt a gender-responsive and anti-oppression analysis in all of your work.
About You: You have an inclusive/intersectional feminist analysis of violence against women and powerful alignment with Ishtar’s mission, values and philosophy. You approach your work and live your life from a decolonizing, womencentred and social justice perspective. You are a team player who strives for excellence but loves to have a good laugh, is able to think fast, be critical and make sound decisions without agonizing, all while working in an incredibly dynamic and fast-paced environment. An advanced degree in counselling psychology, social work or a relevant discipline, plus a minimum of one-year experience working with women affected by violence/abuse and who may also be struggling with substance use, mental and spiritual wellness, poverty and homelessness; or, an undergraduate degree in a related discipline plus a minimum of three years’ experience working in a setting as described above; or, a diploma/certificate in a related discipline in combination with relevant skill-based training and a minimum of five years’ experience working in a setting as described above. Applicants who do not have advanced degrees but who have the equivalent combination of education and experience will be equally considered.

Lived expertise is an asset, as is living in the community in which you work. Ishtar strives to hire staff who reflect the women we serve.
Fluency in one of the three most widely spoken languages (after English) in Langley is a significant asset – (Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi)
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (or similar) certification is an asset
