Job Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director and guided by the practice and ethical standards set out by the Canadian Association of Music Therapists (CAMT), the music therapist conducts assessment, documentation, and evaluation of the attainment of therapy goal and provides music therapy with individual and small group of residents to enhance the psychosocial wellbeing and the sense of purpose for residents in Villa Cathay. Through the music therapy programs, the incumbent promotes, maintains, and restores client’s mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. The music therapist works closely with the recreation team and the interdisciplinary team to develop a holistic care plan for the residents in care. This role also may supervise music therapy students, volunteers, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary and leadership team regarding operational matters and promotion of the senior care program.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop, implement and evaluate music therapy programs for clients; reviews client records, interviews residents or their families, assesses care needs and goals, creates an intervention plan, evaluates the effectiveness of the intervention, and documents music therapy care.
2. Provide music therapy services; evaluates residents responses and behaviours during the music therapy session to promote, restore, or maintain, residents’ physical, psycho-social, cognitive, emotional and spiritual health.
3. Reach out to the house team and the interdisciplinary team to identify residents who are suitable candidates for music therapy.
4. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings; exchanges relevant information, discusses findings and adjusts clients’ intervention plan to ensure optimum patient care and facilitate strong interdisciplinary relationships and focus.
5. Developing suitable Music therapy programs for patients based on their needs, objectives, and preferred forms of music program.
6. Take charge of the adequate level of appliances and instruments and work collaboratively with the Therapeutic Recreation team to make the needed arrangement for stock.
7. Supervising music therapy students and interns.
8. Maintaining detailed records of patients’ progress as well as observations made during music therapy sessions.
9. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Certified as a MTA
- Clearance with Criminal Record Check for Vulnerable Adult BC
- Two years recent experience in senior care setting
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of music therapy and demonstrate excellent communication, analytical, and counseling skills.
- Ability to facilitate small groups or large music sessions.
- Ability to community effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate in Chinese is an asset.
- Ability to work independently, as a part of a self-organizing team, and in collaboration with interdisciplinary team
