Main Purpose & Function

The 2022 Vancouver General Election (“2022 Vancouver Election”) will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Approximately 450,000 registered voters in Vancouver will elect a Mayor, ten Councillors, nine School Trustees and seven Park Board Commissioners. Reporting to the Elections Communications Manager, the Communications Officer (Social Media Officer) provides specialized work in creating a social media strategy, coordinating and monitoring social media sites to ensure an informative and engaging 2022 Vancouver Election.

 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Coordination and leadership

  • Assists in evaluating social media requirements; makes recommendations on content and presentation; assists in defining process and required resources; and recommends solutions and alternatives
  • Makes recommendations on a social media content strategy for the 2022 Vancouver Election
  • Monitors social media channels through the City’s main Hootsuite account to ensure election-related content are strategically-timed
  • Understands the political, social and media environment in Vancouver and alerts the team for issues stemming from social media conversations
  • Assists in posting engaging content following guidelines to maintain a non-partisan, single-tone and voice for City social media presence especially for the 2022 Election
  • Coordinates audio and visual requirements to tell a compelling story aligning with the 2022 Vancouver Election brand and strategic needs
  • Coordinates information and digital assets used for social media to disseminate to community partners
  • Coordinates materials and acts as the primary contact person for social media influencers as it relates to Election-specific initiatives
  • Works with corporate communications to determine the best strategy for paid social media ads; advising on effective channels
  • Coordinates non-English-related social media posts, organic and paid ads

Analysis and reporting

  • Assists in benchmarking and tracking effectiveness of 2022 Vancouver Election social media campaigns and gathering data for regular reporting
  • Researches, tracks analytics, and prepares reports on 2022 Vancouver Election social media activity
  • Recommends useful metrics and uses appropriate tools to track reputation/sentiments and analyze and deliver key insights to 2022 Vancouver Election team
  • Monitors/tracks 2022 Vancouver Election social media activity and helps determine best strategies to respond in a timely and transparent manner
  • Prepares a post-election final report which includes all data and trends related to 2022 Vancouver social media channels and related work

Digital Design

  • Uses graphic design templates created for 2022 Vancouver Election
  • Ensures the web standards developed by the Web Team are maintained across all of the City’s online presence
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

 

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Completion of a university program in a field related to communications, journalism or marketing plus sound related experience in social media coordination, web writing, digital graphic design, public engagement or an equivalent combination of training and experience

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of computer and graphic software including Adobe inDesign, Adobe Photoshop, web page editing, or equivalent computer applications
  • Considerable knowledge of current trends and active posting with standard social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube) and demonstrated passion for social media as a whole
  • Working knowledge of local government
  • Understanding of City of Vancouver’s Equity Framework
  • Strong and engaging writing skills, passion for creating interesting and engaging web content
  • Strong digital design skills; creative flair, originality and a strong visual sense
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of inter-disciplinary work teams, and to work within defined timelines is essential
  • Ability to take initiative, but accepting of feedback and guidance
  • Ability to provide technical advice and guidance regarding the methods and material used in communication strategies to support departmental goals
  • Familiarity with content management systems, web analytics preferred
  • Experience in podcasting, creating videos preferred
  • Ability to communicate in languages other than English considered an asset, with preference given to the languages below
