A Day in the Life
As Director of Organizing, you will report to the Managing Director of Engagement & Growth and will be primarily responsible for guiding your team throughout campaigns to mobilize and organize non-unionized workers – while developing a culture of organizing within the local. You will also work to engage disengaged union members around specific campaigns to build a united and engaged union. Here’s what you can expect to dig into in this exciting, hands-on role:
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Organizing Department of UFCW 1518 to plan and implement external organizing campaigns, while also supporting internal organizing, including:
- Union organizing drives
- Contract ratification campaigns
- Job action campaigns (i.e., strikes)
- Leadership development in disengaged units
- Establish strategies and systems to support and build a growing organizing department that is prepared to take on large organizing targets
- In collaboration with the Managing Director, develop an annual strategic growth plan, with defined targets and goals, and a plan to meet them
- Plan and execute organizing-focused education initiatives to embed a culture of organizing within the local
- Manage special campaigns, including defining project objectives, scope, deliverables, milestones, resource requirements, and sources
- Work closely with the Communications and Campaigns department to develop and execute joint digital lead generation strategies
- Oversee the filing of organizing-related applications (certification, successor rights, unfair labour practice complaints, etc.) to appropriate Labour Boards (LRB and CLRB).
- Coordinate various issue campaigns and projects of the local and coordinate community events throughout the year
- Represent the organization at personnel-related hearings, investigations, mediations, and in resolution of employee-related matters
- Facilitate work between Organizers and Unions Negotiators during first contract negotiations
- Supervise staff in the organizing department, overseeing and advising Organizers in the following:
- Research of potential targets, and timely follow-up on all leads
- Meetings with prospective members
- Development of organizing scripts
- Obtaining signed membership cards
- Organizing and participating in worker meetings, demonstrations, and rallies
- Mobilizing workers and coordinating organizing meetings, actions, and other activities
- Supporting first contract negotiations
Qualifications and Other Requirements:
- 4+ years of experience leading union organizing campaigns, and/or community organizing campaigns, including the design and development of campaign work plans
- Thorough understanding and knowledge of BC labour law and the principles and practices of union organizing
- Ability to supervise staff and build an organizing department and network with allies
- A high degree of judgment and confidentiality
- Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills
- Ability to act, prioritize, and organize time independently
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
- Proficiency in computer literacy and navigating Microsoft Office software, CRMs, and record management
- Able and flexible to travel across the province and work irregular hours
- A commitment to social, racial, gender and economic justice
- Valid class 5 driving license
- Proficiency in English – with FLUENCY In a second language (Punjabi, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Tagalog) – ASSET.

Compensation Range (including guaranteed allowances):
- $118,200 to $125,200, plus vehicle allowance.
