Title: Burnaby Neighbourhood House Heat Response Volunteer Opportunity
Description:
Burnaby Neighbourhood House (BNH) is urgently seeking on-call volunteers to support our Heat Response initiative. In response to the tragic heat dome of 2021 that led to 619 heat-related deaths in British Columbia, we’ve created a specialized task force aimed at preventing further heat-related fatalities in our community. This is an urgent matter, especially for Burnaby, where a majority of these deaths occurred, specifically within the Edmonds area.
As a volunteer for this initiative, you will be responsible for conducting remote wellness checks on seniors during times of extreme heat. Many seniors in our community live alone and have limited English proficiency. Therefore, we are also seeking volunteers who can communicate in languages other than English to cater to these individuals.
Your Role:
– Conduct remote wellness checks on seniors during periods of extreme heat.
– Provide guidance to seniors regarding steps they can take to stay cool during these periods.
– Offer cooling kits to seniors when necessary.
Key Requirements:
– Compassion and respect for seniors.
– Proficiency in languages other than English is a significant asset.
– Particular interest in speakers of Farsi, Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Dari, Spanish
– Ability to be on-call during heatwave events.
– Good communication skills.
This opportunity involves minimal effort and can be done entirely remotely. It involves only speaking on the phone and offers a chance to make a significant difference in our community. In addition, volunteering in this initiative is an excellent way to gain robust volunteer experience in collaboration with various community, health, and government authorities.
BNH is coordinating this heat response initiative with the belief that no senior in our community should suffer or lose their life due to a lack of adequate support during a heat dome event. Your contribution can help us protect our seniors and potentially save lives.
Training will be provided, and we need volunteers to get onboard as soon as possible, with the summer heat approaching.
For more information or to express interest in this volunteering opportunity, please apply. Let’s work together to protect and care for our seniors during times of extreme heat.
